Air purifiers and filtration in Charleston catch particles in the air that passes through them, and that is a useful but limited job. EPA says no air cleaner or filter will eliminate all the pollutants in a home, and that filtration does not replace controlling sources and ventilating.
Aero Air Techs fits a filter or whole home air purifier your system can actually handle, and we tell you when something simpler will do more.
We make no health promises here. If you are managing allergies, asthma or another condition, your doctor is the right source for what will help.
Air purifiers and filtration in Charleston: match the fix to the problem
Start with what is bothering you. The right answer is sometimes not a filter at all.
| What you notice | What can help | What will not |
|---|---|---|
| Dust settling quickly | A better, snug-fitting filter and sealed return leaks | Running the fan with a loose filter |
| Pollen season haze indoors | MERV 13 or as high as the system allows | A thin fiberglass filter |
| Smoke from outside or cooking | Fine-particle filtration, source control and a range hood | Ozone devices |
| Lingering odors or chemical smells | Removing the source, plus carbon with enough material | A thin carbon-coated filter |
| Musty smell | Finding and drying the moisture | Any filter or air cleaner |
| Visible growth | Fixing the water problem and proper cleanup | Air cleaners. We do not offer mold remediation |

What can a whole home air purifier actually do?
It can reduce fine particles in the air that crosses it, as long as that air is moving. EPA says research shows filtration can supplement source control and ventilation. It also says the health gains found with portable HEPA units are typically small and not always noticeable.
Three limits matter in a Charleston home.
- It only works while air moves. A central filter treats nothing when the blower is off, so spring and fall days with little run time see less benefit.
- It treats what reaches it. Gases need carbon, and EPA says that helps only when the filter holds a large amount of it.
- It cannot dry a house. Our humidity is a separate problem, and whole home dehumidifiers address that one.
Our post on why Charleston homes feel humid explains why moisture so often comes first.
Which filter can your system handle?
Check the blower before you buy the filter. MERV is a rating of how well a filter catches particles, and EPA says higher ratings generally mean better removal for most particle sizes. EPA recommends a furnace or HVAC filter rated at least MERV 13 or as high as your system will accommodate.
That last phrase is the catch. A dense filter in a thin 1-inch slot can restrict airflow, which can chill the coil until it ices and leave you calling for AC repair. A deeper cabinet solves much of that, because more filter surface means less resistance.
We measure static pressure, which is the resistance the blower is pushing against, and base the filter choice on that number.

Your options, from simple to involved
These are the common choices, smallest first.
Pleated filter upgrade
This is the first step for most homes. If your slot takes a better filter without strangling the blower, you may need nothing else. Fit matters as much as rating, because air takes the easy path around a loose one. Our guide to how often to change an HVAC filter covers the upkeep.
Media filter cabinet
A media filter is a deep pleated filter in its own cabinet at the air handler. It offers more surface, longer change intervals and usually less restriction. Space around the air handler decides whether it fits, which can be tight in a closet or attic.
HEPA filtration
HEPA means a filter built to catch very fine particles, and it is dense. A central system usually cannot push air through one without a separate bypass unit and its own fan. For one room, a portable unit is the simple answer, and we will say so if that fits your need.
Electronic air cleaners and ionizers
EPA notes that some electrostatic precipitators, ionizers and plasma units may emit ozone, so ask for the ozone data on any model before you buy.

UV light for HVAC, and why ozone is a concern
Be skeptical of big claims in both of these areas.
What EPA says about UV
EPA says typical UV cleaners used in homes have limited effectiveness in killing bacteria and molds, and that killing most spores usually requires much higher exposure than a home unit gives. It also notes that dead mold spores can still cause allergic reactions, so these units may not reduce symptoms. Some contractors aim a lamp at the coil and drain pan to limit growth on those damp surfaces. Treat that as a possible maintenance aid, not a health product.

What EPA says about ozone
Skip anything that makes ozone on purpose. EPA says ozone can damage the lungs and worsen asthma, and that at levels within public health standards it has little potential to remove indoor contaminants. EPA also says some generators can exceed health standards even when used as directed, and that UV lamps without adequate coatings can emit it too.
The rules deserve a plain note. EPA says it does not certify air cleaning devices, and no federal agency has approved ozone generators for use in occupied spaces. A marketing label is not a government approval, so ask for test data from any seller.
What an installation includes
The job depends on the option you pick, and these items stay the same.
- A look at your system type, return layout and current filter slot
- A static pressure reading before and after the change
- Mounting and sealing any new cabinet so air cannot sneak around the filter
- Power and controls for equipment that needs them
- Your filter size and change interval, written down
How the visit runs
- Call or send the form. Tell us the problem and the size printed on your filter.
- We measure. Pressure and space around the air handler set the choices.
- We quote. The scope and price reach you before work begins.
- We install. The cabinet goes in, sealed and accessible for changes.
- We check. We run the system and confirm the airflow is still sound.

What affects the cost of better filtration?
Four things move the price: the type of equipment, the space around your air handler, any sheet metal changes to fit a cabinet and the ongoing cost of filters. Ask about replacement filter cost before you choose, because that is the bill you will pay for years. Manufacturer warranties vary by product, so read the terms and ask the manufacturer directly.
A plain filter upgrade is usually the smallest job, because it uses the slot you already have. A thicker media cabinet adds sheet metal and sealing, and a tight closet can turn that into a longer visit. Electronic cleaners add a power connection and plate washing to the routine. If the static pressure reading is already high, the real cost may sit in the return duct, since a stronger filter on an undersized return can starve the blower. Ask for that reading on the quote, then compare options by what they cost to run for five years.

We are based in Charleston and serve the surrounding areas, including Mount Pleasant, Johns Island and Hanahan. If dust is your main complaint, also read about air duct cleaning and EPA's limits on it, then call with your questions.
Air problems around here vary with what is outside the window.
- Summerville: heavy spring pollen makes a better filter the first thing to price.
- Ravenel: open lots and spring pollen raise the same question, with fewer trees to blame.
- Awendaw: forest-edge homes get pine pollen on the return side, so check filter fit first.
- Goose Creek: if you bought the house recently, confirm the filter size before buying a cabinet.
- Mount Pleasant: two-system homes need a filter plan for each air handler.
- Johns Island: construction dust around new subdivisions can load a filter early.
- Hanahan: a brick ranch with one return is simple to fit, if there is room at the air handler.
- North Charleston: older houses leak outdoor air, so sealing may do more than a stronger filter.
Questions about this service
Will an air purifier help my allergies or asthma?
We cannot promise that. EPA says studies of portable HEPA units found small health gains that are not always noticeable. A filter can reduce particles such as pollen and dust in the air it treats, but your doctor is the right person to advise on symptoms. We stick to the equipment side.
What MERV rating should I use in Charleston?
EPA recommends at least MERV 13 or as high as your system will accommodate, and that second part matters. Many older blowers and thin filter slots struggle with a dense filter. We measure the pressure in your system first, then tell you what it can carry through a long cooling season.
Is UV light for HVAC worth it?
Keep your expectations modest. EPA says typical home UV cleaners have limited effectiveness in killing bacteria and molds, because most need much higher exposure than a home unit gives. If you are still interested, ask for the lamp's ozone data and any independent testing before you buy.
Can a filter fix a musty smell?
No. EPA says air cleaners and HVAC filters do not address the cause of mold and musty odors, because moisture is the real issue. Find the wet spot first. In a Charleston home that is often a crawl space, a slow drain or high indoor humidity, and we can check the HVAC side of that.
Should I buy a portable unit or a whole home air purifier?
Start with where you spend your time. A portable HEPA unit suits one bedroom or office. A whole-home filter treats air only while the blower runs, so it does the most in homes with long run times, which Charleston summers usually provide. Tell us your system type and we can compare.
How often do I change a media filter?
Follow the filter maker's interval, then adjust for your house. Pets, a remodel and long cooling seasons all shorten it. Check it monthly until you learn the pattern, since a loaded filter restricts airflow. Our filter guide has a simple way to set your schedule.
